by Apr 6, 20201st choice inspections, Home Inspections, HVAC Inspections

It’s important to make sure your home is clean and safe, especially if you’re under a shelter-in-place order. Since you’ll be spending most of your time at home for the foreseeable future, you need to make sure there’s very little chance of getting sick from poor sanitation. Take some time during the lockdown to do a deep clean of the surfaces in your home. This will keep you and your loved ones safe from contamination and make your home a better, happier place to stay in all day long.

If you’re concerned about the safety of your home, contact 1st Choice Inspection Services. We’ll do a thorough inspection of your home’s structure, roof, plumbing, and much more. We do a full report and provide photos of any problems we find, and we let you know how you can get these problems fixed quickly and effectively. Call us today for inspection services in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Before you disinfect, it’s important to scrub any high-contact surfaces, like doorknobs, light switches, and countertops, with soap and water. This is like washing your hands before putting on hand sanitizer. If you go straight to disinfecting, you’re still leaving behind some built up dirt and grime.

The most effective way to keep your home clean is to wash before disinfecting. Once you’ve scrubbed everything, hit your surfaces with a strong disinfectant like Lysol or 70% isopropyl alcohol. Follow the instructions on the product’s label to ensure you’re using it safely and effectively. Use this disinfectant in a well-ventilated area, and leave it on the surface. Don’t wipe it off or dry it unless the instructions specifically tell you to. If needed, be sure to wear gloves while you disinfect.

Fabrics and Soft Surfaces

For surfaces like leather, fabric, and upholstery, you can scrub them down with soap and water, or with any cleaning product made to use on these surfaces. If you can, launder these products according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not clean these surfaces with bleach, since it will lighten the color and might even destroy some fabrics. If possible, disinfect these surfaces as well. Look online and try to find a disinfectant made for soft, fabric surfaces. If you’re cleaning a couch, bed, or any other furniture with hard-to-reach places, use a vacuum attachment to get any dust or crumbs out of the folds.

Electronics

When cleaning electronic surfaces, check the manufacturer’s website to see if there’s any cleaning instructions. If not, you can use screen wipes, cleaners with alcohol, or disinfectant wipes. Since your phone screen is a great place for bacteria to hang out, take your phone case off and clean your screen at least once every other day. If you’re cleaning a keyboard, use a can of compressed air to blow the dust and crumbs out of the crevices before cleaning with watered-down isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Do not use ethyl alcohol, since it could wipe the painted letters and numbers off your keys.
